At Betfair you can choose to bet on their sportsbook platform or you can choose to bet on their exchange platform.
Betfair’s betting exchange platform allows fellow bettors to swap or ‘exchange’ bets with one another in person-to-person betting. Even though Betfair will charge a commission (from 2% to 7% depending on one’s country of residence and bet frequency), the advantage of a betting exchange is that bettors can achieve better odds (up to 25% better) than at a traditional bookmaker.
For how to place a bet at Betfair’s sportsbook platform, please refer to #3-5. For how to place a bet on Betfair’s betting exchange platform, please refer to #6-8.
(3)Sportsbook: Select the game/match that you would like to bet on
In this example, we will show you how to place a bet on an English Premier League soccer game. First, click on the “Sportsbook” tab located at the top left-hand side of the screen. Next, click on “Football” followed by “Barclays Premier League”.
(4)Sportsbook: Select your bet type
One of the easiest to understand bet types is “Match Odds 1X2” (also known as Money Line or Full Time Result). A Match Odds 1X2 bet means you pick which team you think will either win or tie. In our example above, we have three choices by either picking 1 – Home) Man Utd to win, 2 – Away) Swansea to win or X – Draw) Man Utd to tie Swansea. In this example, we will pick Man Utd to win, therefore we will click on the odds 1.3.
※ Note the date and time of the match. The date and time are displayed based on the time zone of the country of residence you selected when first registering at Betfair. To change your preferred time zone, click on “My Account” in the upper part of the screen.
Next, click “My Betfair Account”.
Once you have accessed your Account Summary screen, click on the “ACCOUNT DETAILS” tab.
From the “ACCOUNT DETAILS” screen, go to the Address section and click on “Edit”.
Next, edit the time zone per your preference followed by entering in your Betfair password. Lastly, click the yellow “Save” button.
(5)Sportsbook: Enter your bet amount
After clicking the odds that you would like to place a bet on, your bet selection will show on the right-hand side of the screen.
Once you enter your stake (the amount of money that you would like to bet), the amount of money (stake + profit) that would be returned to you should you win on the bet will be shown automatically under your stake figure.
Once you have entered the stake for your bet(s), confirm your bet and then click the yellow “Place Bets” button to finalize your bet(s).
※ Other Bet Options (Sportsbook)
If you refer to the screenshot below, you will see “All Markets” to the right of the game’s odds. If you click on this link, all available bet types (95 in this example) will be shown to you for this particular game.
Examples of other bet options
A “Double Chance” bet means that you can place one bet on two different outcomes such as 1) the home team wins or ties, 2) the away team wins or ties or 3) no tie score, which means either the home team wins or away team wins.
A “Correct Score” bet means that you can place a bet on what you think will be the final score of the game.
A “Half Time/Full Time” bet, also known as a “1st Half Result/2nd Half Result” bet, means that you can place a bet on what you think will be the correct outcome of the first half and also the final score. Using the Man Utd – Swansea example, if the score at half time is 0-1 and the final score is 2-1, you would need to bet on “Swansea/Man Utd” in order to win the bet.
A “Under/Over” bet, which is always set at “Over X.5” and “Under X.5”, means that you place a bet on the total number of goals that you think will be scored in a game. “Over 2.5” means that 3 goals or more would be a winning bet while “Under 2.5” means that 2 goals or less would be a winning bet.
A “Draw No Bet” bet means that you place a bet on which team you think will win. If the outcome is a draw then your stake will be returned to you and no loss will be incurred.
(6)Exchange: Select the game/match that you would like to bet on
In this example, we will show you how to place a bet on an English Premier League soccer game. First, click on the “Exchange” tab located at the top left-hand side of the screen. Next, click on “Football”.
From the list of football categories, select “English Football”.
From the list of English football categories, select “Barclays Premier League”.
(7)Exchange: Select your bet type
One of the easiest to understand bet types is “Match Odds 1X2” (also known as Money Line or Full Time Result). A Match Odds 1X2 bet on an exchange platform means you pick which team you think will either 1) win, 2) tie, 3) not win or 4) not tie. In our example above, we have the following six bet choices:
1 (Blue) – Home) Man Utd to win
1 (Red) – Home) Man Utd to not win ※ a Swansea win or a tie would equal a winning bet
2 (Blue) – Away) Swansea to win
2 (Red) – Away) Swansea to not win ※ a Man Utd win or a tie would equal a winning bet
X (Blue) – Man Utd to tie Swansea
X (Red) – Man Utd to not tie Swansea ※ a Man Utd win or a Swansea win would equal a winning bet
In this example we will pick Man Utd to not win, therefore we will click on the odds 1.35.
※ Note that when comparing the odds on the Exchange platform to Betfair’s own Sportsbook platform, the major difference you will notice is that the odds listed on the Exchange platform for the most part are higher.
(8)Exchange: Enter your bet amount
After clicking the odds that you would like a fellow bettor to place a bet on, your bet selection will show under Betslip on the right-hand side of the screen.
To change the setting so that you can see the payout amount if your bet were to win, click on “Your liability” followed by “Your payout” and then click “OK”.
Once you enter in the stake for a fellow bettor (the amount of money that you would like a fellow bettor to bet), the amount of money (profit + risk) that would be returned to you should you win on the bet will be shown automatically above your “Liability” amount (£13.50 in this case). ※ Note that this amount does not include Betfair’s commission (from 2% to 7%).
If you were to lose the bet, you would lose your “Liability” (£3.50 in this example) to the opposing bettor. In addition, Betfair would assess a commission charge (from 2% to 7%) on your “Liability” amount.
Once you are finished adjusting the Backer’s odds and the Backer’s stake, confirm your bet(s) and then click the yellow “Place bets” button to submit your bet(s) to the exchange for a fellow bettor to view and accept.
Using the same example, if you were to adjust the Backer’s odds from 1.35 to 10 and keep the Backer’s stake at 10, the amount of money (profit + risk) that would be returned to you should you win on the bet would be £100.00 in this case. ※ Note the payout amount does not include Betfair’s commission (from 2% to 7%).
If you were to lose the bet, you would lose your “Liability” (£90.00 in this example) to the opposing bettor. In addition, Betfair would assess a commission charge (from 2% to 7%) on your “Liability” amount.
