GNP Seguros WTA Finals Cancun: Can Swiatek Finish 2023 on a High?

WTA Finals

The WTA season comes to a close this week with the best eight women going head to head for one last time in Cancun, Mexico at the GNP Seguros WTA Finals. With a round robin format meaning that every match this week will deliver fireworks, and the year-end No. 1 spot up for grabs plus $9,000,000 in prize money, this will be an excellent week of tennis to wrap up the season.

The headline story is Aryna Sabalenka vs. Iga Swiatek as both women are eligible to finish the year as No. 1. However, given the surprises that the WTA Finals often serves up, whether or not these two will even get to play each other remains a question. Coco Gauff will be hoping to hijack the event and write her own story, with the American the most in-form player on the WTA Tour at the moment. Who will end their season on a high?

This time last year, Iga Swiatek came into the 2022 WTA Finals expected to win the event with little trouble. She didn’t with Carolina Garcia instead charging all the way to the title. This year will the event unfold as expected or will we yet again see one of the underdog players hit some form?

The circumstances for Swiatek are very different this year as opposed to last. We say she’ll be eager to prove a point in Cancun after the likes of Sabalenka and Gauff have taken most of the limelight the past few months.

While Gauff won the US Open and Sabalenka recently ascended the rankings to become world No. 1, the reality is that Swiatek actually arrives in Mexico in the best form out of the main contenders. She won the China Open weeks ago, defeating Gauff en route to the title. With Sabalenka suffering several uncharacteristic losses and not playing much tennis this quarter, plus Gauff perhaps having played too much tennis, we say Swiatek is the best bet to win the WTA Finals at 3.50.
