Citi Open 2022: With the Defending Champ Out, Who’ll Take the Title in DC?

The 53rd edition of Citi Open is around the corner and we have an array of jam-packed action to look forward to. The tournament will take place in the capital of the United States, Washington DC, from the 1st to the 7th of August.

Citi Open is one of the oldest tournaments on the ATP circuit and the fourth-longest running tennis tournament in the USA. American player and tennis legend Andre Agassi has the most Citi Open titles to his name having won the tournament five times. Other notable champions to have won the tournament include Andy Roddick, Jimmy Connors, Ivan Lendl, and the big four’s biggest threat, Juan Martin del Potro. The tournament will take place at Rock Creek Park, the same venue that has hosted the tournament since the tournament was inaugurated back in 1969.

※ Current Odds Date & Time: July 31st, 3:00 p.m. (GMT)

Bwin LogoAndre Rublev is coming in as betting favorite for this rendition of the Washington Open. Online bookmaker Bwin has Rublev priced at 7.50 for the tournament. However, with Rublev’s recent performances, he will need to step up his game a bit if he wants to walk away with this title.

Nick Kyrgios is a strong contender at 8.50. Kyrgios has shown us what he is capable of during his recent run to the final at Wimbledon. But if history has taught us anything, it’s that Kyrgios needs to deal with his inconsistencies to make a deep run in this tournament.

Taylor Fritz and Hubert Hurkacz are next on the list priced at 9.00 each, and each for the right reasons. If both players are able to keep up their current form and deal with their shortcomings, we just might see them clashing in the final.

Since last year’s champion, Jannik Sinner, won’t be returning to defend his title, expect Andrey Rublev, as the top-seeded player, to go up against the likes of Hubert Hurkacz, Grigor Dimitrov, and Karen Khachanov to clinch his first Citi Open title in DC.

To start off on the right foot, Andrey Rublev has received a walkover for the first round and will be moving directly to the second round where we will see him clash against the winner of Stefan Kozlov and Jack Draper’s duel. Some other notable first round action pins Jack Sock against David Goffin with the winner facing 13th seed Maxime Cressy, who received a bye in the first round.

Look for 6th seed Denis Shapovalov, who has a first-round bye but will most likely face the up-and-coming player J.J. Wolff in the second round, to put in a strong performance in this tournament.

3rd seed Taylor Fritz, who has received a bye in the first round as well, will have all the home support and might face Alexiei Popyrin of Australia in the second round. Adding to the drama, we may even see a British face-off in the second round between likes of Dan Evans and Kyle Edmund. 11th seed Alex de Minaur and 7th seed Karen Khachanov also have first-round byes so we will see them in action from the second round.

Moving on to the bottom half of the draw, we have the big servers in Reilly Opelka and the second seed Hubert Hurkacz. The American has a tricky path ahead of him as he might face his fellow countrymen Denis Kudla in the second round and Tommy Paul in the third round while setting up a possible quarter-final against the Big Foe – Francis Tiafoe.

Wimbledon runner-up Nick Kyrgios will begin his campaign by facing off against Marcos Giron in the first round followed by a potential date with 14th seed Tommy Paul in the second round. 5th seed Grigor Dimitrov is set to face the winner of the Bradley Klahn and Adrian Mannarino clash in the second round.

15th seed Aslan Karatsev has also received a first-round bye and will have a very spicy second round match most likely against Andy Murray, who will be facing Mikael Ymer in the first round. Lastly, Hurkacz has a first-round bye and will probably duel against Mackenzie McDonald, who is all set to face Emil Ruusuvuori in the first round.

With so many interesting matches within one week, it’s difficult to say which match we should look forward to the most. We might get to see a very interesting final between Fritz and Hurkacz, who have been showing excellent form lately. Both of them have one win against the other and will be going all out to add another trophy to their cabinet, and the champion will certainly receive a major confidence boost for the US Open. Both players share a similar record on the hard court, so we can expect a fiery clash in the final but Fritz just might have an edge as he has been showing slightly better form in his recent matches.

The main draw matches will start from Monday, the 1st of August with the final scheduled for Sunday, the 7th of August. The winner will be awarded a check for $342,800 and 500 ranking points.
