Milan’s season has started to fall apart very suddenly as the team finished off 2022 flying high in the league and had also booked a place in the Champions League knockout stages. The new year even got off to a positive start when the Rossoneri beat Salernitana 2-1 away from home, but it’s all gone sour now.

If Milan fails to win another game on Sunday, they will hit their worst win-less streak since 2005. Not to mention the fact that their Champions League hopes would get another blow in a tight race between five teams.

Milan’s miserable run also includes one derby defeat already. The two teams met in an Italian Super Cup clash in Saudi Arabia on Jan. 18 and Inter ran amok with a 3-0 win. The first league derby of the season ended with Milan’s 3-2 victory back in September.

Rafael Leao led the charge in the league clash with two goals and an assist and he’s expected to produce another big performance. The Portuguese ace is the team’s highest scorer with eight Serie A goals and also sits at the top of the assists table having set up six goals.

Inter lost the first league derby of the campaign, but they have had a much better record in the fixture in recent years and should be confident of another positive result on Sunday. There have been only two derby defeats for them from the last eight clashes and the run of results includes three 3-0 triumphs in total.

The Nerazzurri can’t be happy about their form either as they have already taken six league losses this season when they had seven in total across the previous two campaigns combined. However, a run of five wins, two draws and one loss in eight January outings shows that they are currently in a much better state compared to their city rivals.

Lautaro Martinez in particular has been crushing it in 2023. He finished off the scoring against Milan in Saudi Arabia and has posted six goals in total across his last seven appearances. The Rossoneri know all about his quality as Martinez has scored six goals against Milan, which is his second-best mark against any opposition.
