After going 34 years without a win in the matchup, Canada have a chance to beat the U.S. for the second time in three meetings. Alphonso Davies started the scoring en route to a 2-0 victory in a Nations League clash in 2019.
Sadly, Davies isn’t available for Canada this summer as the Bayern star is nursing an ankle problem and there are a couple of other exciting talents missing as well, but the team is clearly on the rise and facing the Americans will be a good test.
The Canadiens have picked up a pair of 4-1 victories at the tournament and they still look extremely dangerous even with Davies missing. Cyle Larin has already netted three times and Junior Hoilett, who is playing for a new contract, has shined with one goal and two assists.
Larin struggled during his first years in Europe and his numbers for the national side dropped as well, but he had a superb season for Besiktas with 19 goals in the Turkish top flight and the 26-year-old has also been in spectacular form for Canada this calendar year with 10 goals in eight appearances.
The U.S. had a sluggish start at the tournament with a narrow 1-0 victory over Haiti, but they looked much better in a 6-1 drubbing of Martinique and even with the likes of Christian Pulisic and Giovanni Reyna sitting, there’s still enough talent in the squad to make another deep run at the competition.
The Stars and Stripes missed out on the last World Cup, but Gregg Berhalter has done a very good job in turning things around and he’s made the U.S. very tough to beat. The former defender has taken only six losses in 31 matches in charge of the team.
Berhalter will hope that his troops can slow down Larin, and the team is set to get a big boost from the stands with the Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City sold out for the clash.
