Alvarez vs. Golovkin: Can the Old Lion Roar One Last Time in this Super-Middleweight Title Fight?

One of the true joys of boxing is a fiercely contested trilogy between two evenly matched rivals.

This Saturday night brings just that as Canelo Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin square off for the third edition of their fighting trilogy. With the first fight in 2017 ending in a controversial split draw and Alvarez winning the 2018 rematch on a majority decision after failing multiple drug tests, this clash is perfectly primed to be a thriller.

ウィリアムヒルUK bookmaker William Hill has the odds ahead of this weekend’s fight.

Current Odds Date & Time: September 13th, 2:00 P.M. (EST)

While Alvarez was the underdog in the 2017 fight, he now enters this match as the overwhelming favorite in the odds. Paying 1.20 for a win, compared to Golovkin’s 4.33, William Hill has this one clearly weighted towards the younger Mexican fighter.

Alvarez winning on a decision is the most likely result, paying 2.00, with a knockout victory not far behind on 2.60. Golovkin’s best odds are by way of decision as well, but are far longer at 9.00.

These odds indicate what many boxing fans have feared—this fight has been set about three years too late. Since their 2018 clash, Golovkin has remained undefeated, stretching his professional record to 41-1-1 with his only stains at the hand of Alvarez. However, his past few fights have seen the champion become noticeably slower with the 40-year-old beginning to show his age.

With Golovkin nearing retirement, there’s no doubt the old lion will be looking to leave with one last roar. Thirty-seven knockouts, excellent conditioning, and a steely chin position the great champion well to do just that, and regardless of the odds, punters would be remiss to overlook the chance of an upset here.

Alvarez, on the other hand, has continued to go from strength to strength since the two last met.

Seven wins in a row saw the Mexican become the undisputed super-middleweight title holder as well as the light-heavyweight champion. While five years ago Golovkin was the bigger, stronger fighter, the 32-year-old Alvarez has continued to pack on muscle and now has the physical upper hand.

A recent defeat at the hand of Kyrgyz Dmitry Bivol will have been a wake-up call to Alvarez who will not want his 57-2-2 record to be tarnished any further this weekend. With superior movement, a strong counter right, and powerful body punches, expect Alvarez to wear his older opponent down and win another decision against Golovkin.
