Can the US Shock England Again at the World Cup?

The United States and England are set to square off for a third time at the FIFA World Cup on Friday and the USMNT is looking to defend an unbeaten record in the match-up.

10Bet LogoBookmaker 10bet has the odds at 2.65 for the US to avoid defeat again, while the odds are at 1.52 for England to get the three points.

The two teams last met at the 2010 World Cup and played out a 1-1 draw after Robert Green famously gifted the Americans the equalizer with a horrible howler. There was also a shock 1-0 win for the USA in the 1950 edition.

The 1950 result was regarded as the biggest shock in World Cup history until Saudi Arabia beat Argentina on Tuesday. Stats firm Gracenote calculated a 9.5 percent chance of winning the match for the USA, while the Saudis’ success was rated at 8.7 percent. There was even a movie made of the Americans’ triumph back in 2005.

We likely won’t be getting a motion picture made out of the clash this time around but it should be an entertaining affair. The US squad is full of potential and there should be plenty of motivation for them as well on Friday.

After blowing a lead against Wales, Gregg Berhalter’s side needs something on the board from the fixture to avoid finding themselves in a very uncomfortable position in the final round of group-stage action. The Welsh will face Iran on Friday, and judging by how the Iranians performed versus England, it’s going to be a big surprise if Gareth Bale and his friends don’t register a nice victory there.

England recorded the team’s biggest-ever win in a tournament-opening game against Iran, racking up three first-half goals and finishing with a 6-2 victory in the end. Harry Kane ran the show as a set-up man and there were a host of chances for the attacking players. Even Harry Maguire got close to a goal.

Kane failed to score in the opening game but stood out with two assists and should be running the show again against the USMNT. He is chasing history in Qatar with Wayne Rooney’s all-time scoring record for England just two goals away. Kane won the Golden Boot at the last World Cup and he surely won’t remain without a goal for long. Considering the bad history against the USA, it would be a very special sight if the England captain grabbed the game-winner Friday.
