Goodwood 2022: Nashwa Aims for the Nassau as Raasel Heads the King George Qatar Stakes Market

Nashwa is the strong favourite to land the feature race on day three of the 2022 Glorious Goodwood Festival in the 1 mile 2 furlong Nassau Stakes on Thursday.

888sport LogoThe Group One race is one of the marquee events for fillies and mares in the British flat season, and John and Thady Gosden’s 3-year-old is currently 1.57 with 888sport to land the £340,260 prize money.

Nashwa is aiming for consecutive Group One wins after succeeding in the Prix de Diane – the “French Oaks” – a month ago at Chantilly and will, as usual, be creating an all-female partnership with Hollie Doyle, her rider for all five races in her career where she has never finished worse than third.

The best of the rest of the 9-strong field is Lilac Road, trained by William Haggas, now at 7.00 with 888Sport. The 4-year-old is suited to the conditions; she generally runs best on good ground as she did on her last outing winning a fillies stakes at York in May. Tom Marquand’s ride is well-rested and could prove to be a challenger to Nashwa.

Ryan Moore is on 13.00 chance Concert Hall. They have recorded one victory together from three runs this season. Dreamloper and Ville De Grace have shortened to 9.00 and 13.00 respectively and are interesting each-way shots.

Friday sees the sprinters take centre stage with the King George Qatar Stakes over 5 furlongs.

A much more open field, the top seven in the market are all between 4.00 and 9.00 with 888sport, but it’s Raasel at 4.00 who currently heads the betting.

A winner of eight of his last ten runs, all over this distance and on varying grounds, the 5-year-old is attempting a second win at Goodwood this season after a handicap victory in May. James Doyle is in the saddle again as he was then.

This will, however, be a step up in class as this will be his first Group 2 appearance, but having shortened from 8.00 to 4.00, he is still well-fancied.

Challenging for favouritism is the runner-up to Raasel at Sandown this month in Mitbaahy who is being ridden by David Egan. Odds have shortened from 11.00 into 5.00. Out for revenge, Roger Varian’s runner had posted two victories before that meeting, so the horse is in good form.

Khaadem (7.50) has a victory this season while Fitri Hay’s other runner in Equilateral (7.00) is still looking for that first win. William Buick was on board for Khaadem’s triumph, but he will instead ride 8.00 chance Lazuli for Godolphin and Charlie Appleby.
