If they can’t qualify for the next round, Atletico will definitely look back at the first leg and rue their inability to build a comfortable lead for the visit to Manchester. Joao Felix gave the team the perfect start by opening the scoring in the seventh minute, but they failed to finish off the job and had to settle for a 1-1 draw after Anthony Elanga bagged a late goal.
The Red Devils are now favorites to advance although Atletico actually head into the return leg in much better form. They have won four of their last five outings and their last two away trips have also ended victorious.
Felix has been heavily involved in the offense lately and will likely be Atletico’s main threat again on Tuesday. He’s been involved in seven goals in his past seven appearances and is currently enjoying his best run for form since heading to Madrid in 2019.
United enter the action after managing to win just three of their last nine games. They went three matches without a victory before Cristiano Ronaldo popped up with a hat trick against Tottenham on Saturday to lead the team to a 3-2 win.
Ralf Rangnick’s men will now try to win back-to-back games for the first time in nearly two months. It’s been a very inconsistent season for United and their performance levels tend to fluctuate heavily in most outings.
The home advantage looks huge here for United, but the Old Trafford crowd is very demanding and the atmosphere at the stadium could end up working against the team if they can’t make a good start and struggle to create openings like it happened in Madrid.
Will Ronaldo bail his team out again? He’s scored a number of huge goals in Europe this season and should be very motivated to perform after failing to score in the first leg. He’s gone goalless in consecutive games just twice in the Champions League since the start of 2019-20.
