Toronto was able to grab the lead against New Jersey last Thursday but ended up needing a late William Nylander strike to extend the game into overtime. Yegor Sharangovich was the eventual hero of the night in the extra frame, delivering what was then the 11th consecutive victory for the Devils.
Lindy Ruff’s team only just snuck by the Maple Leafs, but they have gone on to post two very convincing victories with a combined score of 10-4. Even Connor McDavid and his crew haven’t found a way to stop the red-hot Devils, taking a second loss against them Monday night.
Yegor Sharangovich scored another goal and Nico Hischier piled up three assists as the team tied their best-ever winning streak in franchise history with a 13th consecutive victory. Will they set a new mark on Wednesday?
With only one regulation defeat suffered in their last 11 games, the Leafs are enjoying some fine form as well. Now, if they only could shake off the injury bug. The team’s defense has been hit with various injury blows throughout the season and it was now announced on Tuesday that Morgan Rielly will be out for multiple weeks with a knee problem.
Rielly plays a big part for the team at both ends of the ice and you can’t really replace him. Head coach Sheldon Keefe will simply have to hope that his attacking players can carry all the offense.
The Leafs attack features one of the hottest players in the league. Mitchell Marner has put together a 13-game point streak and his form overall this season has been so good that he’s gone scoreless just twice in 20 games. The 25-year-old speedster has formed a deadly duo with John Tavares on the second line. Could they be the ones who finally end New Jersey’s run?
Despite losing the most recent meeting, Toronto has a very good record in the match-up. They have won four straight visits to the Prudential Center and last week’s defeat is their lone loss in their last nine head-to-head meetings.
