Saturday night boxing action in Las Vegas not only plays host to a long overdue trilogy clash between Alvarez and Golovkin, but also an exciting WBC World Super Flyweight Belt fight as well.
Two young Mexican super flyweights, Jesse Rodriguez and Israel Gonzalez, meet in the co-main event of Canelo vs. GGG. With the WBC crown on the line, as well as Rodriguez’s undefeated record, expect these two to deliver a fight that will thoroughly warm up the crowd ahead of the evening’s headline bout.
Bookmaker William Hill has the odds for Rodriguez vs. Gonzalez,as we break down each fighter’s chances of winning and path to victory.
※ Current Odds Date & Time: September 14th, 4:00 P.M. (EST)
Despite Israel Gonzalez holding a respectable professional record of 28-4-1, he stands as the huge underdog against Jesse Rodriguez.
William Hill has Rodriguez a 1.06 favorite to win with Gonzalez’s odds an improbable 9.00 to come away victorious. Oddsmakers expect Rodriguez to finish this early as the method of victory most favored by William Hill is a Rodriguez knockout at 1.33. Odds of 3.50 have this one going the distance for a Rodriguez decision while if Gonzalez was to win, his best odds are by way of knockout at 13.00.
As the current WBC World Super Flyweight Champion, Rodriguez sits so far ahead in the odds because of his ruthless ascent up the ranks. At 22 years old, Rodriguez is boxing’s youngest champion since he claimed the belt in February with a win over Carlos Cuadras. A successful defense only months ago saw Rodriguez named ESPN’s Fighter of the Year.
Israel Gonzalez is not a bad fighter by any stretch of the imagination but will be hard-pressed to win this one. This will be the Mexican’s fifth world title fight at the tender age of 25 years old. Those four previous fights also represent the four losses on Gonzalez’s record, and while he is a strong opponent for Rodriguez, it’s hard to see him taking the WBC title off his compatriot this weekend.
Rodriguez appears to be more motivated than ever, stating recently, “Each fight now is more important than the last. It’s not about just winning; it’s how you win.”
If Gonzalez is to defy the odds and cause an upset here, he will need to leverage his reach advantage over Rodriguez. By staying mobile and at range, Gonzalez can use his fast hands, strong left jab and excellent body punches to pick up points.
However, against a relentless pressure fighter like Rodriguez who has 11 knockouts from 16 wins, this is easier said than done. Chances are Gonzalez may pick up a few early rounds while Rodriguez is settling in but expect this one to go the way of the WBC Super Flyweight champion, most likely in a knockout towards the end of the fight.
