Despite finishing two wins clear of the rest of the pack on 42 points, St. Helens and Wigan are neck-and-neck when it comes to the bookies odds to win the Super League XXVII Grand Final. Bookmaker William Hill is offering odds of 2.25 for St. Helens, who is marginally ahead of Wigan’s 2.87, a team that placed second on the table behind St. Helens during the regular season.

The men in red and white of St. Helens have stuttered towards the end of the regular season with speculation surrounding the reason for this being they had already confirmed pole position on the table. With two losses in their last three games, St. Helens still managed to stand head and shoulders above the other 11 teams in this year’s Super League having been the team to beat all year. However, one of those losses was a tight 20-18 defeat at the hands of Wigan, their closest rivals this season.

While second on the ladder this season, Wigan have struggled for consistency. Their eight losses have been evenly spread across the year with their latest coming at the hands of Hull KR in late August, the week after their upset defeat of St. Helens. However, Wigan managed to finish the season strong winning 48-4 over fourth placed Catalans.

Well behind in the odds, as their most recent performance indicates, Catalan are the third favourites to win the Super League title this year. William Hill gives them odds of 8.00, a significant jump back from St. Helens and Wigan but ahead of the remaining three finalists who sit between 12.00 and 13.00 to win the Grand Final.

The Super League XXVII Grand Final will be played on the 24th of September with two weekends of playoffs beforehand. This weekend, top two teams St. Helens and Wigan have a bye while Catalans play Leeds and Hudderfield play Salford. The winners progress to the semi-finals where St. Helens will play the lowest ranked qualifier and Wigan the highest.

The two winners from next weekend’s play will then progress to the Grand Final and have a shot at winning the Super League XXVII.
