The Premier League weekend finishes off with a big match between Chelsea and Liverpool who have drawn six straight head-to-head meetings. Will the trend finally end on Sunday?
Bookmaker William Hill has the odds at 2.75 for a Chelsea win and at 2.37 for Liverpool to get the three points. The odds for another draw between the sides are at 3.60.
※ Current Odds Date & Time: August 11th, 5:30 P.M. (EST)
The run of draws in the match-up started with a 1-1 result during the 2021-22 Premier League campaign, and amazingly, all the last four meetings between the teams have finished goalless. No other fixture in English football history has previously had five straight 0-0 draws, meaning we could witness history Sunday evening.
Chelsea shares a Premier League record with 20 opening-round victories, but the team had a horrible campaign in 2022-23 and there’s still quite a bit of uncertainty surrounding the Blues. They are expected to enjoy a bounce-back season under new boss Mauricio Pochettino, but there’s already been one big setback in the form of Christopher Nkunku’s knee injury, which looks set to keep him out of action until January, and play starts with a very tough match.
Liverpool finished last season with an impressive 11-game unbeaten streak and the Reds boast a very good record from their opening league games, having not suffered a single loss since 2012.
With the likes of Roberto Firmino, Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, and James Milner walking out of the door, the Liverpool team is set to look quite different compared to previous seasons, but the club has made two big signings in Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister and certainly seems to now have the most firepower in the league on paper.
The Liverpool attack will still, of course, be led by Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian star has a very proud opening-round record and will look to further improve it against his former side on Sunday. Salah is the only player in Premier League history to score in six consecutive season openers.
Another goal would also make Salah the outright top scorer on opening day in the Premier League. He has netted a total of eight times so far in the first round, sharing the league record with Alan Shearer, Frank Lampard, and Wayne Rooney. Having scored only four times in 12 Premier League meetings against Chelsea, Salah has generally struggled to make his mark in this fixture, but he did score in both clashes in 2021-22 before the current run of goalless draws in this match-up started.
