Westover is the favourite for the 2023 edition of the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, the 1 mile 4 furlong Group 1 contest that is one of the highlights of the French racing year.
Ralph Beckett’s 4-year-old is at 1.53 with William Hill despite being win-less in his last four races.
He was, however, second in the Coronation Cup behind Emily Upjohn at Epsom at the beginning of the month and second in the Grade 1 Dubai Sheema Classic at Meydan in March.
※ Current Odds Date & Time: July 7th, 7:30 P.M. (BST)
Sixth in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and fifth of six in the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes have also come and gone since his last win – and only at Group 1 level – the Irish Derby just over a year ago.
Rob Hornby rides as he did at Epsom and Longchamp.
The best local challenger according to the market is Yann Barberot’s Zagrey at 4.50.
Also a 4-year-old – as all five runners are – Zagrey has run three times at Meydan this year under Christophe Soumillon, who will be on board tomorrow too.
Those runs in the Middle East resulted in a second, third and a fourth, with the best performance being the third in the Dubai Sheema Classic, one place behind Westover.
At 7.50 is German runner Tunnes, the mount of Rene Piechulek and trained by Peter Schiergen.
Tunnes is also a veteran of the Coronation Cup where he was fourth in what was his most recent race, and prior to that he was second in a Group 2 in Cologne, both over tomorrow’s distance.
He was ninth in the Japan Cup at Tokyo in November but did break his Group 1 duck earlier in the month, taking the Grosser Allianz-Preis von Bayern at Munich.
At 8.50 is Junko, who is still looking for his first victory in group company.
Andre Fabre’s runner has had two tastes of Group 1 level racing thus far, coming sixth in Dubai Turf at Meydan before finishing sixth and last in the Prix d’Ispahan at Longchamp in May.
Fabre and jockey Maxime Guyon will be hoping a first try at a longer trip will work out.
Ralph Beckett’s Malabu Drive is expected to do little more than make up the numbers at 126.00.
Dougie Costello takes the ride from Colin Keane on a horse that has one career win so far, which came almost a year ago and has never been entered in a group race of any kind.
