Scotland has played with great confidence at home, winning four straight games with a combined score of 10-1. If the team is successful again on Tuesday, the Tartan Army will have a chance to celebrate Scotland’s first five-game home winning streak since 2007.
The Scottish team has made good progression under Steve Clarke and wasn’t far away from being in back-to-back major tournaments. After playing in the Euros, Scotland’s road to the Qatar World Cup ended in a playoff against Ukraine when Clarke’s men went down 3-1 at Hampden Park last June. The result marks one of only two home losses Scotland has suffered since the start of 2020.
Spain, of course, was at the World Cup but ended up crashing out in a round-of-16 tie against Morocco. The result ended Luis Enrique’s reign as manager and former U21s boss Luis de la Fuente has just made a winning debut with a 3-0 victory over Norway.
La Roja played well on Saturday but struggled to put the game away until de la Fuente made a key substitution in the second half. He sent on Espanyol striker Joselu for his national team debut in the 81st minute and the win was done and dusted by the time the 85th minute came around.
It took only 147 seconds for Joselu to find his first goal for the team and he quickly became Spain’s first-ever debutant to score two goals as a substitute. The 32-year-old made a massive impact in the game but it’s also left de la Fuente in a difficult situation.
De la Fuente has just named Alvaro Morata the new team captain and there’s no room for an extra striker in his 4-3-3 formation. Joselu replaced the Atletico man against Norway and certainly did more than enough to break into the starting eleven for Tuesday’s clash, but de la Fuente might still prefer the player with the bigger reputation and the captain’s armband.
