WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play 2023 | Will Scottie Scheffler Have the Last Laugh in Texas?

This week sees a unique few days of golf unfold in Texas, for several reasons. First, the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play tournament will be contested from Wednesday to Sunday in Austin using the rare match play format as opposed to stroke play. As well as this, it will be the final time this tournament is held signalling the end to a 24 year long tradition.

ウィリアムヒルWith so much at stake, who will have the last laugh in Texas? Can Scottie Scheffler continue his fine form both on the PGA Tour this year and at this venue as he has for the past three years? Or will one of the other big names in this tournament—namely Jon Rahm and Rory McIlory—rain on the American’s parade? We break down all the latest odds from bookmaker William Hill and give our expert picks on the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play 2023.

Current Odds Date & Time: March 22nd, 1:00 A.M. (GMT)

There are no surprises at bookmaker William Hill this week with the top three favourites in the betting odds going according to the current world rankings. Scottie Scheffler is the favourite at 9.00, holding a reasonably significant lead over Jon Rahm at 12.00, and Rory McIlroy at 13.00. These three are the clear leaders with a decent gap down to fourth spot in the betting odds where Patrick Cantlay is at 19.00. Tyrell Hatton then rounds out the top five betting favourites with odds of 23.00.

The No. 1 spot on the PGA Tour has been playing hot potato this year with Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm and Scottie Scheffler all taking a turn. While the year started off focused on Jon Rahm, who won back-to-back events and had a rare shot at winning three in a row at the Farmers Insurance Open, recent events have seen Scottie Scheffler rise to the top.

The American has now won two of his past four starts. With a win last week at the PLAYERS Championship, Scheffler has ascended to the top spot in the sport yet again becoming World No. 1. Scheffler also won the WM Phoenix Open in late 2022 and has finished in the Top 12 of the past nine events he’s competed in. It’s this kind of consistency that makes Scheffler the heavy favourite to win this week, at 9.00 in the betting odds.

Not only has Scheffler been wildly consistent across his past nine events on the PGA Tour, but he’s also performed very well at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play over recent years. He steps onto the green this Wednesday as the defending champion having beaten Kevin Kisner in the final last year. The year before that, Scheffler was narrowly defeated in the final by Billy Horschel.

We say backing Scheffler at 9.00 to win this event is a great wager. Those who are looking to be a little more conservative, however, could choose to back Scheffler to top his group instead. This has lower odds of 1.91 but is an even more assured outcome.
