ATP Masters 1000 Miami Open 2023 | Who Can Resist the Powers of Alcaraz?

Tennis fans, sit back, relax, and enjoy yet another feast of tennis over the next ten days. After a mesmerising Indian Wells Masters 1000 tournament last week, the best of the best in men’s tennis head over to Miami this week to do it all again. With the second half of the Sunshine Double also being played on hard courts, is there anyone who can resist the seemingly unstoppable momentum of Carlos Alcaraz?

Daniil Medvedev will certainly be eager to exact some revenge in what is the final major hard court tournament before the ATP Tour shifts its focus to the European clay court swing. The Russian will be joined by Casper Ruud, who will be desperate to kick start his season in the same manner as he did last year by making a deep run in Miami. Throw in the likes of Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev, Jannik Sinner and Holger Rune, and the absence of Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal will barely be noticed in Miami.

Current Odds Date & Time: March 22nd, 2:00 P.M. (GMT)

Looking at the outright winner odds for the Miami Open 2023 from bookmaker William Hill, two things are apparent. First, this is a two-horse race with Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev leagues ahead of the rest of the field, priced at 2.75 and 3.75 respectively, compared to the next best challenger in Jannik Sinner at 10.00. Second, the odds have shifted significantly from just ten days ago ahead of the Indian Wells Open where Medvedev was the favourite.

Now, Alcaraz is firmly in front as the favourite at the Miami Open. The rest of the top five has shifted as well with Holger Rune slipping out and Felix Auger-Aliassime coming in at 21.00 as fifth favourite. Stefanos Tsitsipas’s odds have also taken a hit, dropping to 15.00 that puts him at fourth in the betting odds.

It’s very difficult to make a case against Carlos Alcaraz here. The Spaniard is coming into Miami fresh off the back of his third Masters 1000 win in Indian Wells, which also returned him to the World No. 1 ranking for the first time since January. Not only this, but Alcaraz won the title without dropping a set and defeated three of the top five favourites heading into Miami in his final three matches. Up against Auger-Aliassime in the quarterfinals, Alcaraz prevailed 6-4, 6-4. He then navigated Jannik Sinner 7-6(4), 6-3 in the semifinals before emphatically ending Medvedev’s 19-match winning streak in the final, 6-3, 6-2.

The question is: Who can stop Carlos Alcaraz in Miami? The answer seems to be either one of the two players who are absent or Alcaraz’s own body. Given that the US border patrol is unlikely to change their mind about Djokovic in the next few hours, Nadal is not due back on the court anytime soon, and Alcaraz looked perfectly healthy in Indian Wells, we say the Spaniard should canter to another title here.
