2024 Canada SVNS | Argentina Eye Hat-Trick Sevens Title

2024 Canada Sevens

The 2023/24 Rugby Sevens season is about to witness its fourth event of the year as Vancouver welcomes 12 teams, including the hosts, for its annual rugby festival. The 2024 Canada Sevens will bring back SVNS action to BC Place for a three-day competition, with Argentina heading into the event leading the SVNS points table with a healthy 14-point lead.

Argentina currently boast 58 points after three Sevens events. Having conquered Cape Town and Perth earlier in the season, Los Pumas now set their sights on securing the treble at Rainy City. Santiago Alvarez’s men enter the fray with blazing-hot form, but are they the runaway favourites to win the title in Vancouver?

The betting odds to win the tournament outright depict a more competitive scene, nonetheless. Argentina is understandably the ultimate favourite at 3.50, but Fiji at 5.00 is closely trailing behind. Australia at 5.50 and South Africa at 5.50 are also strongly favoured to mount a successful title challenge in Canada.

New Zealand at 7.00 emerges as the most intriguing betting opportunity. The Kiwis were among the title contenders in the Perth Sevens but suffered a premature exit from the group stages. Their disappointing campaign in Australia positions them as somewhat of an underdog this time around, but they are no strangers to such a situation.

The 2020 Canada Sevens champion had a sluggish start to their previous season as well. However, they gradually regained momentum as the season progressed, ultimately finishing at the top of the table. The All Blacks clinched victory in five events along the way, so it wouldn’t be surprising to witness the defending SVNS champions bounce back with a triumphant Canada Sevens run.

Supporting New Zealand to win the fiercely competitive Pool C is also an enticing prospect at 2.62. They are grouped with South Africa and Ireland, both of whom currently rank above the All Blacks in the SVNS standings. Nonetheless, New Zealand has the quality in their squad to surpass both of these teams and emerge as champion of Pool C.

Argentina will face strong competition from Fiji for the top spot in Pool A, but we believe the hat-trick chasers will prevail. The South Americans are brimming with confidence, and we don’t see their form waning in the group stages. While France could receive a boost from the inclusion of Antoine Dupont in the Sevens squad, Australia, who has already secured two runner-up finishes this season, is likely to outperform them and claim the top spot in Pool B.
