With the season entering a pivotal part, Nice has hit a roadblock at the worst possible time. The team hasn’t won any of its last five league outings, losing three times. The poor run has doubled the side’s number of losses for the season. Scoring goals has also become a massive problem for Francesco Farioli’s men, with Nice shooting blanks three times in the past five league matches.

Nice’s season has started to fall apart, but all isn’t yet lost for Farioli’s side. With a winning effort on Friday, Nice can reclaim a top-three position before the rest of the challengers for Champions League qualification hit the pitch for Round 25.

Montpellier sits third from bottom, meaning Nice will be left very disappointed if the team can’t put a stop to the recent poor spell on Friday night.

There were a couple of big results for Montpellier early in the season, but it has been a grind for most parts for the 2012 Ligue 1 champion. Entering Friday’s action, Montpellier has won only twice in its last 15 league matches, suffering seven losses along the way.

The team’s defense has been in shambles, and manager Michel Der Zakarian hasn’t had enough reliable goal threats – only five Montpellier players have scored more than once in Ligue 1 this season.

Nice has an even poorer attacking record than Montpellier, with only 23 goals scored, but the team has been among the best defensive sides in Europe in 2023-24. The outstanding work at the back has kept Nice in contention for a top-three finish. If Farioli’s troops can get back to keeping clean sheets, Nice would still have a good chance to qualify for the Champions League group stage for the first time in club history.

Montpellier will need to pay very close attention to Terem Moffi. The Nigerian forward has been involved in nearly 40 percent of Nice’s goals this season in Ligue 1. He’s struggled to make an impact in the last couple of months, but Moffi has just scored his seventh goal of the campaign versus Toulouse, which should boost his confidence.
