The west coast of Canada will see their share of rivalries tonight as well.

The battle of Alberta will take place (again in exhibition form) as the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers open up their exhibition preseason tonight. While this is only an exhibition game and is used for teams to prepare for the playoffs, I expect this game to be chippy right off the hop.

The NHL are trying to garner some interest in their exhibition games, but this contest will certainly be interesting. The two clubs showed hatred towards one another during the regular season and that will spill into tonight’s exhibition game.

One thing to note is that this is the only game both teams will see before qualifying rounds begin. This means that coaches Geoff Ward and Dave Tippett will need to make crucial decisions with their lineups. You want stars like Connor McDavid to see real ice time, but you don’t want to risk injury, either.

Flames, Oilers add classic chapter to Battle of Alberta lore ...

Of course, the allocation of minutes will determine the outcome of the game, thus affecting tonight’s odds. The over/under for tonight is listed at 6 1/2. But if top players like McDavid, Draisaitl, Monahan, and Goudreau all see limited ice time, that will greatly impact both teams hitting the over.

While it’s hard to predict what will happen in tonight’s game, expect this contest to be hard-hitting. Both teams have disdain for one another and that will always be the case, whether it’s a preseason or regular season contest.
