Only a few sides have frustrated Pep Guardiola during his managerial career, with results being hard to come by for his sides, and Liverpool is among them. Guardiola has won only seven of his 21 meetings with Liverpool, losing eight times. Through the years, he’s tasted victory at Anfield only once – in a 4-1 triumph in 2021, with no fans at the ground due to COVID restrictions.
The rough outing from three years ago marks Livepool’s lone defeat against Man City in the last 20 clashes at Anfield. The Reds have won 13 of the games, including last season when Mohamed Salah scored the only goal of the match in the second half.
Salah boasts 11 goals and seven assists in total across his last 19 appearances against City, and he makes a very timely return from injury for Liverpool at the weekend. Jürgen Klopp’s men have played well without him, but a Liverpool side with Salah in it is definitely a much better side than the one without him.
Klopp also has Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz firing on all cylinders. The latter has scored in three straight Anfield outings, while Nunez has racked up eight goals and three assists in his past 10 games for Liverpool.
City tends to struggle at Anfield, but the team’s overall away form is outstanding – Guardiola’s men have strung together a 10-game winning streak on their travels. This even with Erling Haaland going without a goal in three consecutive Premier League away games.
It’s been an uncharacteristic scoring drought for Haaland, but his overall form has been very impressive recently. He’ll be aiming to score in a fourth consecutive game on Sunday and has amassed eight goals across his last five appearances for City.
After going scoreless in the league against Liverpool last season, Haaland opened his account in the match-up in November when the two sides played out a 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium. With only one point between them, both would likely be happy to split the points again, but a win on Sunday would be a massive momentum boost for the victorious side in this year’s fascinating Premier League title race.
