Mönchengladbach have beaten Bayern at home in two consecutive seasons and the 20 points they have picked up in the matchup since the start of 2014-15 marks the most points any side has managed to record against the league’s dominant force.
It’s been just a few weeks since Borussia’s last win over Bayern as the two met in a preseason friendly in Munich. The history in the fixture should make the team feel extremely confident ahead of the season opener.
Mönchengladbach kicks off the new campaign with a new man in charge after Marco Rose was snapped up by Borussia Dortmund. The reins were handed to Adi Hütter who has impressed as the manager of Eintracht Frankfurt the past three seasons.
The Austrian has a big job at his hands after the Colts dropped to eighth last season in the Bundesliga. The team had one of the worst defensive records in the league and the leaky defense clearly needs to be fixed for the side to get back into Champions League contention.
Last season, Borussia played in the Champions League group stages for only the third time in club history and they even managed to advance to the Round of 16 where they got taken down by Manchester City.
Bayern were champions for the ninth straight year in Germany last season and they are heavily favored to pick up another title in 2022.
The Bavarians lost a couple of pieces over the summer with David Alaba, Javi Martinez and Jerome Boateng moving on, but the team has a great crop of youngsters in the squad and Dayot Upamecano is a massive signing for the defense.
Adding to that, Robert Lewandowski is set for another year in Munich and having him is almost like cheating in the Bundesliga. The Polish scoring machine broke the league record with a 41-goal year last season and he’ll start the 2021-22 campaign on a 10-game scoring run.
The 32-year-old failed to get on the scoresheet in just four Bundesliga matches last season and Mönchengladbach had no answers against him either with Lewandowski notching four goals in two matches.
