Denmark Tries to Frustrate England Once More

The EURO 2020 semifinals continue on Wednesday with England taking on Denmark. The Three Lions have 13 wins to Denmark’s five from previous head-to-head clashes, but the Danes produced two upsets when these two met during the Nations League group stage last year.

10Bet LogoBookmaker 10Bet has the odds at 2.20 for Denmark to avoid defeat again. The odds are at 1.74 for England to win.

The first meeting in September finished goalless in Copenhagen and Denmark ended up as shock-winners a month later at Wembley with Christian Eriksen producing a 1-0 game-winner from the penalty spot. The result marks England’s lone loss in their last 18 Wembley outings.

England have been almost like a home team throughout the Euros with only one of their five matches played elsewhere. It’s been a big advantage for the team although you wouldn’t have said so during the group stage when Gareth Southgate’s men looked quite lethargic.

However, things have started to come together for England in the knockout stages and even Harry Kane is scoring goals again.

The England captain had a very poor start to the tournament when he was barely involved in the games, but he’s now netted three times in the last two matches and that has given him a chance to add the Euros Golden Boot to his collection of awards.

Kane’s improved form is a nice bonus for the team after they have impressed with their defensive work. England have notched seven clean sheets for the first time ever and it’s been 662 minutes since the last time they conceded a goal. Jordan Pickford has become only the second goalkeeper behind Iker Casillas with five clean sheets in one Euros edition.

Eriksen won’t be able to help Denmark in the matchup this time around, but they shouldn’t be underestimated in the clash. Kasper Hjulmand’s team played Belgium off the park during the first 25 minutes of a group stage clash and similar to England, they have improved a lot compared to the start of the competition.

Denmark have been known as a very strong defensive side, but they have started to score goals for fun finding the net 10 times in their last three matches. England’s clean sheet streak certainly faces a major test here.

There’s a lot at stake and the fear of losing can have a negative effect on any team, but Denmark have played a very exciting brand of football and it’s unlikely that they will change their approach here. Fixing something that isn’t broken just doesn’t make sense.
