The Andalusians have been very draw-happy in Europe this season and it’s put them in a very tough spot. They have only three points so far and sit two points away from a qualifying berth. Wolfsburg and Lille both have five points while Salzburg tops the table with seven points.
Sevilla’s troubles are heavily related to their poor scoring record. Two of their three Champions League goals have come from penalties.
The goals have flowed much better for Julen Lopetegui’s men in La Liga and it will give them hope of finally getting going in Europe as well. Only Real Madrid have more goals in the Spanish top flight this season, and Sevilla boasts 12 different scorers in the league, which shows that there’s plenty of attacking potential. Lopetegui just needs to find the right lineup to get things clicking.
Wolfsburg have had a rollercoaster ride so far this season. The team started the season with three straight wins in the Bundesliga but their form completely collapsed at the start of October, which ended up costing Mark van Bommel his job as manager. The 2009 German champions were very quick to pull the trigger as van Bommel was only hired in the summer and was given just 13 games to prove his worth.
Former Werder Bremen boss Florian Kohfeldt is now in charge and he’s off to a pretty impressive start at the club with three wins and no losses in four games. The first defeat was close at the weekend against Arminia Bielefeld, but Kohfeldt found a way to maneuver the team out of a two-goal deficit to play out a draw.
Lukas Nmecha completed the comeback on Saturday and he’s now scored in all four games under Kohfeldt. Van Bommel didn’t trust the 22-year-old a lot and must be regretting it now.
Nmecha has been developing at a rapid pace and even made his debut for Germany this month. He’s a very unique player who’s strong in the air but also likes to have the ball at his feet and is very skillful with it.
Teams are struggling to keep Nmecha off the score sheet and it won’t be easy to keep him in check for Sevilla either. But they need to find a way to do it to keep their Champions League hopes alive.
