Union have topped the table in Germany for most of the season, but they boast only four points from the last four games and it has allowed Bayern Munich to fly past them. Bayern have also quickly built themselves a four-point lead at the top, so it will be vital for both Union and Freiburg to get the three points on Sunday to keep pace with the league leaders.
A lot of their success has come from strong defensive displays but Union have also had one of the most dangerous attacking players in the league in Sheraldo Becker. The Surinamese forward has recorded seven goals and four assists in 14 Bundesliga appearances, and he has just ended a six-game scoring drought, which should give Becker a nice boost in confidence for Sunday.
When speaking about Union’s success, you also can’t look past their goalkeeper Frederik Ronnow. The former Frankfurt man has stopped a league-best 81.4 percent of shots this season, and it’s clearly not a coincidence that Union’s results have dropped just as Ronnow has been forced to skip games with a hamstring problem. He remains unavailable on Sunday, which is a bad blow for Urs Fischer’s team.
Freiburg are dealing with a few injuries as well right now, but the prolific duo of Vincenzo Grifo and Michael Gregoritsch remains available, so they should fancy their chances against a Ronnow-less Union.
Grifo enters the contest with six goals to his name and Gregoritsch has netted five times this season. The two have been responsible for more than half of the team’s goals (21) and Union’s success will depend a lot on how well they can limit Grifo’s and Gregoritsch’s impact in the game.
The head-to-head meetings have been dominated by Union since their promotion to the Bundesliga in 2019. They did the league double last season in this match-up and even won 4-1 at Freiburg’s Europa-Park Stadion. In total, Freiburg have won just one of the seven meetings the two teams have had since Union became a top-flight club.
