Inter are off to a shaky start to the season and if they want to get a result on Tuesday, manager Simone Inzaghi definitely needs to have a good plan to shut down Robert Lewandowski. Erling Haaland seems to grab all the headlines these days, but the Polish veteran is also off to an incredible start to the campaign with 12 goals in nine games.
With his winner over the weekend against Mallorca, Lewandowski became the fastest player in the 21st century to reach nine goals in La Liga, doing it in just seven matches. He’s needed only 18 shots on target to reach the mark, meaning that you have to mark him tightly in every situation otherwise it likely won’t end well for you.
Italian sides have always been known for their tight defensive play, but Inzaghi likes to play an expansive style and he’ll be under pressure to win on Tuesday. Inter’s start to the Serie A campaign has been horrible and the team has just equaled a club record by losing half of the first eight outings of a league season.
All the league losses have come in Inter’s last six matches and that means there isn’t much room for error left anymore for Inzaghi whose side is sitting ninth in the league and faces an uphill battle trying to qualify in the Champions League in a group that also includes Bayern Munich.
The two famous European sides will have their 11th-ever meeting. Inter’s lone victory in the match-up is a famous 3-1 win in the 2010 semifinals, which set the team on its way to winning a treble under Jose Mourinho. Barcelona have picked up six wins and they triumphed with a 2-1 scoreline in both matches when these two were together in the same group the last time in 2019-20. The head-to-head record strongly favors the Spanish side but Barcelona have won only 12 of their last 28 away matches in Europe.
