Leipzig had a very poor start to the European campaign and lost the reverse fixture 2-0 in Madrid, but back-to-back wins have lifted the team to second place in the group and their chances of qualification look quite good. Real are already through with 10 points while Shakhtar Donetsk, who incredibly beat Leipzig in the opening round away from home 4-1, boast six points and Celtic are on one point.
It’s been a turbulent season for the Red Bulls as the team was forced to change managers after a poor start and things have been pretty rock after the change as well. Marco Rose, who was hired to replace Domenico Tedesco last month, saw his side draw 3-3 with Augsburg over the weekend in a game where Leipzig fell behind by three goals. They rescued a point with only a late rally scoring three times inside the final 20 minutes of action.
Real definitely won’t be as kind as Augsburg even if they have nothing left to play for after cruising through the first four rounds of fixtures.
Los Blancos are also looking in great form in the league and haven’t even been troubled by Karim Benzema’s injury issues. The newly-crowned Ballon d’Or winner missed his fifth game of the campaign over the weekend against Sevilla. The Frenchman will also sit for Tuesday’s action and Leipzig have received further good news with Federico Valverde also not traveling to Germany.
The Uruguayan midfielder scored a rocket against Sevilla in Saturday’s 3-1 win to continue his amazing start to the season. After scoring only six times in his first three years at Real, Valverde has already netted seven goals in 2022-23, and he is now even sharing the team lead in goals with Vinicius Junior.
Real are missing a couple of big pieces, but Carlo Ancelotti still has a very strong squad at his disposal and it’s still a huge test for Leipzig. They have to be at their very best against the defending champions to have a chance of getting anything out of the match.
