Two weeks after beating PSG at home for the first time in 12 years in the French Cup, Marseille gets a chance to repeat the feat in a league fixture on Sunday.
The two teams have played out a draw just once in the past 12 head-to-head meetings and bookmaker William Hill has the odds at 2.20 for both teams to score on Sunday with the game not ending in a draw.
※ Current Odds Date & Time: February 25th, 1:30 P.M. (EST)
Marseille beat PSG 2-1 in the cup via goals from Alexis Sanchez and Ruslan Malinovskyi that the team has followed up with back-to-back victories in the league. Igor Tudor has done a wonderful job at the helm with 52 points from the 24 games mark, which is Marseille’s best-ever haul in Ligue 1.
It’s been 12 years since Marseille last beat their fierce rivals in back-to-back games and another triumph on Sunday would be very special as it would put the team just two points off PSG in the title race.
Can Sanchez make a big impact again? He scored a brace recently in a 2-0 win against Clermont and has re-ignited his career in France this season, leading Marseille with nine league goals.
PSG will look for Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi to lead the way. The team is battling a number of injuries at present and the Big Three in Paris has momentarily turned into the Big Two after Neymar hurt his ankle against Lille last weekend.
Both Mbappe and Messi had a massive role in a 4-3 victory over Lille and their heroics came at a great time after PSG were in danger of dropping another game. The 2023 results have so far been inconsistent for PSG as the team has won only half of its eight league outings, losing three times.
PSG’s lack of form has made things very interesting at the top of the Ligue 1 table. Prior to the World Cup, PSG looked to have been cruising toward another league title, but Marseille has done a good job in closing the gap and Monaco aren’t far away either anymore after winning seven of their last nine league games.
Sunday’s match-up at the Stade Velodrome could be a decisive game in the title race. If PSG gets their revenge for the cup defeat and beats the second team in the league, it would be a signal to the rest of the league that the Parisians still run the show in Ligue 1. However, Marseille’s triumph would be a real sign of intent, and we could be set for a very intriguing title battle in France this spring.
