The Gunners are looking to triumph in a second consecutive Big Six clash after beating Manchester City in the last round. A 1-0 triumph ended Arsenal’s miserable run of 13 consecutive league defeats against City, and the team must now feel extremely confident. Mikel Arteta’s men have proven that last season was no fluke, and they can again demonstrate their title credentials with another win on Saturday.
Chelsea has had a tough beginning to the season, but the side’s recent run of victories is a sign of improvement, and it was only a matter of time before things started to click for Mauricio Pochettino. The Blues now need to put together a winning streak in the league as well.
Getting results against Arsenal has been a problem for Chelsea in recent seasons. Following a 2-0 win at the Emirates in 2021, the team has lost three consecutive meetings with the Gunners, giving up eight goals. Pochettino must clearly tighten things up at the back for Chelsea to have a chance of ending the poor run on Saturday.
Chelsea’s cause could be helped by Arsenal’s injuries. Bukayo Saka already missed the City match and couldn’t turn out for England during the break, while an injury in the previous game also knocked out Leandro Trossard. At the back, there’s a question mark hanging over William Saliba, who’s dealing with a toe injury. Chelsea’s injury list is much longer, but that’s three very important players potentially missing the contest, and it could seriously disrupt Arsenal’s play.
If Arsenal manages to avoid any hiccups and gets at least a point on the board Saturday, it would lift the team past Tottenham to the top of the league. It should be a great motivator for whoever turns out of the team in the match, but as a proud former Spurs boss, Pochettino won’t lack an incentive either. He has lost only four of his previous 15 games against Arsenal as manager, although there have also been just four wins in the match-up for the Argentine.
