These few weeks must be one of the strangest patches in the tennis calendar. After the first seven months of the year progress fairly logically—hard court tournaments ahead of the Australian Open, a healthy clay court swing leading into Roland-Garros and then grass before Wimbledon—the ATP Tour reverts somewhat in August. Rather than pure hard court tournaments in preparation for the US Open, many players opt to head back to European clay for a short stint.
This week in Hamburg, those that have elected to indulge in a little extra clay action will fight it out for their share of the ATP points on offer. Andrey Rublev and Casper Ruud are the two big names, having just fought it out in the Bastad final last night with Rublev coming out on top. Will we see a case of Groundhog Day again this weekend in the Hamburg European Open final or can one of the other 30 contenders spoil their party?
We break down all the latest odds from bookmaker William Hill ahead of this ATP 500 event outlining the best bets to make on the Hamburg European Open 2023 before the week’s play begins.
※ Current Odds Date & Time: July 23rd, 10:30 P.M. (GMT)
Looking at the outright betting odds, bookmaker William Hill is unable to split the two big names Andrey Rublev and Casper Ruud. Both men pay 4.75 to win the tournament, slightly ahead of former world No. 2 Alexander Zverev who sits at 6.00 to win. Behind these three, Lorenzo Musetti and Francisco Cerundolo round out the top five betting favourites at 8.00 and 9.50 respectively.
For those who are inclined to pick between the two favourites for an outright winner bet, we’d say go with Andrey Rublev. While the first set between Rublev and Ruud was tight in the Bastad final, the Russian well and truly ran away with the match 6-0 in the second. It’s hard to see Ruud making the changes necessary to flip that result in the space of seven days.
However, backing Rublev isn’t necessarily the best bet in Hamburg this week. The 25-year-old doesn’t have the best record of following up title wins the next tournament and could well have a bit of a post-victory hangover, metaphorically speaking.
Instead, we say Francisco Cerundolo is a strong wager here. Sure, the Argentinian may not be playing as hot over recent months as he was earlier in the year but these kind of clay tournaments are his bread and butter. With a tired Rublev and Ruud, and Cerundolo paying 9.50 to win, this is by far the best value bet from the odds offered by bookmaker William Hill ahead of the Hamburg European Open 2023.
