PGA Tour: Mexican Open 2023 | Rahm Likely to Dominate After Rest

Mexican Open 2023

Mexico has its moment in the sun this week as the PGA Tour heads to Vallarta for the Mexican Open 2023. Though this is only the second running of the tournament, already there is a story line emerging. This time last year Jon Rahm won his only title of 2022—and now after winning the Masters and taking a break, the Spaniard has returned to defend his title.

ウィリアムヒルWith Rahm in very different form from 2022 and a thin field featuring only nine of the world’s top 100 golfers, will the Mexican Open simply be a walk in the park for the World No. 1? Or will we see some dark horses emerge and upset the plot in Vallarta? Come with us as we break down the best bets to place on the Mexican Open 2023 with the latest odds from bookmaker William Hill.

Looking at the outright odds to win the Mexican Open 2023, it’s clear that one competitor is well ahead of the rest of the pack: Jon Rahm. The World No. 1 is paying a strong 3.60 to win in Vallarta, significantly more favoured than number two in the betting odds, which is Tony Finau at 9.00. Behind these two, there’s an even greater drop off to the rest of the top five betting favourites as Wyndham Clark, Gary Woodland and Patrick Rodgers all pay between 19.00 and 29.00 to win.

In terms of the odds for top five finishes, a similar pattern emerges. Rahm is greater than a 50% chance to finish in the top five, paying 1.67. Behind him, Finau is at 2.75, while Wyndham pays a comparatively strong 4.50 before Woodland and Rodgers come in at 6.00 and 6.50 respectively.

The reason why the bookies have Jon Rahm as such a strong favourite is three-fold. First, Rahm is in brilliant form having won four titles so far in 2023 including the most recent Masters. Despite his high number of titles, Rahm is well rested having not played since the Masters. Second, the Spaniard’s game suits this course—he’s the defending champion and won by a stroke this time last year.

Third, and perhaps the biggest reason why Rahm is such a favourite, is the low strength of the field. Tony Finau is the only other genuine contender fronting up on Thursday and even he is the World No. 16. Scheduling quirks mean none of the other in-form players of 2023 will be challenging Rahm and this should be a straightforward victory for him.

It may not be the flashiest bet in the world but backing Rahm for the title at 3.60 is still a lucrative wager and has a strong chance of coming off this weekend.
