Marseille won the first meeting of the season 3-2 when Sead Kolasinac struck the winner in the 98th minute. The result means that the teams have now exchanged victories for seven straight meetings.
The triumph over Monaco was Marseille’s second win of the current hot spell. The team has struggled for consistency under first-year manager Igor Tudor, but the squad finally seems to have adapted to his approach to things and there are plenty of reasons to be excited for the Marseille faithful.
Kolasinac isn’t the only former Arsenal man to shine in France. Alexis Sanches, Nuno Tavares and Matteo Guendouzi are all playing key roles for Marseille. Throughout the years, Marseille have relied heavily on Dimitri Payet, but there are now multiple match-winners in the squad and a great group effort has put the team just five points adrift of league-leading PSG.
Monaco aren’t far away from the top either, sitting five points behind Marseille, and they have also found some good form at the midpoint of the season. Philippe Clement has overseen three victories in the last four league games and the team exploded for a huge 7-1 win against Ajaccio last week.
Wissam Ben Yedder and Breel Embolo combined for five goals in the Ajaccio match, and they will be expected to carry the team again Saturday. Both have hit double figures for goals this season in Ligue 1 and PSG are the only other side with multiple players on 10-plus goals.
Ben Yedder also notched a goal in the first game against Marseille and enters Saturday’s action with a four-game scoring streak. Defensively, things haven’t gone too well for Marseille during their current winning streak and Tudor will definitely want to see an improvement against the red-hot Ben Yedder and his squad. Should Marseille get three points again, Tudor would become the first manager to lead the team to seven straight league victories since Marcelo Bielsa in 2014-15.
