Los Angeles SVNS 2024: Can Argentina Keep Up Their Domination?

Sevens action heads to the United States this week, with Los Angeles hosting the LA SVNS 2024 from Friday to Sunday. Twelve teams will be out in force to stake their claim on the next piece of silverware up for grabs, but who will prevail?

The World Rugby SVNS Series is just four events old this season, and yet there’s already a clear favourite to take out the title. Unlike last year, where five different teams won the first five tournaments, Argentina has begun the season at a blistering pace. Can anyone dethrone the Pumas in Los Angeles or will it be another romp home for the men in blue and white?

Outright betting odds are no surprise heading into the Los Angeles Sevens this weekend. Argentina is a heavy favourite—too heavy, some would say—paying just 2.90 to win the tournament. Rarely will a team pay under 4.00, let alone 3.00 to win a SVNS event, indicating just how dominant the Argentinians have been this year.

Behind them, it’s fallen finalist New Zealand who pays 4.50 to win in Los Angeles. The next closest favourites are Fiji and France who are level on 6.50, before South Africa round out the realistic favourites at 8.50 in the outright betting odds.

On the one hand, all signs are pointing towards Argentina winning again. The Pumas finished runner-up in the opening event of the season, but since then have been unbeaten. With three titles in a row, the side haven’t even dropped a pool match in two events. However, such dominance is rare in Sevens, and chances are it comes to an end in Los Angeles.

We say it will be either at the hands of New Zealand or France. The Kiwis are the obvious choice, given they’ve just finished runner-up in Vancouver last weekend. Their pedigree plus recent form makes them a natural bet to win, should Argentina fall over.

Those after a slightly more lucrative bet may want to look at France, however. Les Blues have been looking increasingly dangerous with Antoine Dupont on the field, and with a generous return of 6.50, it could be worthwhile wagering on them to go all the way while odds are still high at the bookies.
