The two square off against each other for the first time since 2017 when a dramatic finish in Glasgow led to a 2-2 draw. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain gave England a late lead with a 70-minute strike, but Leigh Griffiths fired back twice to put Scotland up inside the final minutes. In the end, the Three Lions needed a Harry Kane goal in injury time to avoid defeat.
England haven’t been defeated in the fixture since 1999 when Don Hutchinson delivered Scotland a 1-0 victory at the old Wembley. It was a special day for the Scots as they have tasted victory in the matchup very rarely over the last 40 years notching three wins in 16 meetings.
Despite England’s dominance, the head-to-head results between the two remain quite even with England winning 48 times and Scotland picking up 41 victories. The 2017 result marked the 25th draw in the matchup.
After beating Croatia in their EURO opener, England probably wouldn’t mind a draw here either, but Scotland should be ready to go all out for the victory.
Steve Clarke’s team showed plenty of passion and quality in their opening game against the Czech Republic, but Patrik Schick put on a show with two goals – including a spectacular 49.7-yard strike – and Scotland’s first game at a major tournament in 23 years ended with a 2-0 loss.
Scotland out-shot the opposition 19-10 in the game, but they weren’t clinical enough. It’s no surprise either with the whole team managing to combine for only 36 international goals so far.
With England having recorded six clean sheets in seven games, the scoring won’t get any easier here and it will certainly be a much tougher test defensively for Scotland.
England failed to impress against Croatia, but they did just enough to start the tournament off with three points and that was no doubt the main goal for Gareth Southgate. The England manager will be confident of seeing better performances from his troops as the tournament progresses.
On paper, the English squad looks much stronger and they are the odds-on favorite for the clash, but Scotland should bring a lot of energy and intensity to the pitch, which will spark their fans and could lead to a special night.
