The Canucks have looked very promising at times, but they can’t seem to keep the puck out of their net and it’s led to some humiliating defeats. Bruce Boudreau’s side became the first team in NHL history to give up four straight multi-goal leads to start the season, and they also couldn’t hold on to multiple one-goal leads in their fifth match of the campaign.
The leaky defense has resulted in Vancouver carrying the fourth-worst goals-against average in the league with 4.29. To make matters worse, Vancouver’s No. 1 defenseman Quinn Hughes got injured last week and will miss multiple games. His absence is awful news for the team at both ends of the ice.
The Canucks also have the sixth-worst goals-for average with 2.57 and their attack has received a further blow with Brock Boeser’s injury. The talented right wing missed Monday’s 3-2 loss to Carolina and will also be sidelined for Thursday.
Seattle has managed to stay relatively healthy, but the team has two goalies out injured, which could eventually cause big trouble. Martin Jones has a lot of pressure on his shoulder and he will definitely need to improve from his current numbers. The veteran netminder is allowing 3.31 goals per game this season with a .870 save percentage.
The Kraken still have a lot of improvements to make, but the team is playing much better compared to their debut campaign and the future looks exciting with youngsters like Matty Beniers stepping up.
Beniers made some special history at the start of the season in joining Jonathan Toews and Joe Sakic as the third teenager to register a point in at least 11 of his first 12 career appearances in the NHL. He has scored in back-to-back games ahead of Thursday’s action. With Beniers in top form, the Kraken have scored 3.25 goals per game this season and they will be providing the shaky Canucks a stern test.
