Tottenham beat Marseille in the reserve fixture 2-0 to get off to a nice start in Europe, but for some reason Antonio Conte tends to struggle with his teams in the Champions League and 2022-23 has been no different.
Conte, who serves a touchline ban on Tuesday, has won just 14 of 39 matches in the Champions League as manager, losing 12 times. It’s the sixth season for him in Europe’s premier competition and three of the previous five campaigns have ended in a group stage exit for him. Another failure would leave a large stain on Conte’s otherwise impressive CV.
Luckily for Conte and Tottenham, Marseille head into the clash in awful form. The team had a spectacular start to the season and managed to go toe to toe with PSG in Ligue 1 for the first couple of months, but it’s all gone wrong in October. Igor Tudor saw his side suffer three consecutive defeats before finally stopping the losing run last weekend with a 2-2 draw against Strasbourg, which wasn’t a great result either.
Tudor received a lot of praise early on, but he’s now under pressure with his side having dropped to fifth in the league and sitting bottom of their group in Europe. Marseille are in an uncomfortable position in Group D, but they actually even have a chance to grab the top spot with a victory on Tuesday. This would be seen as a huge achievement by Tudor.
There’s a very big decision to be made for Tudor for Tuesday’s match – will he trust Dimitri Payet as a starter in the clash? At 35, the former Hammer isn’t an automatic choice for the team anymore, but he still boasts bags of quality and has the ability to win a match with a single moment of magic. He has just become only the 11th player in history to register 100 goals and 100 assists in a single league and Spurs can’t afford to have any lapses of concentration when Payet is on the pitch.
