Real Madrid Takes on Granada with Title Hopes on the Line

Real had a couple of poor attacking outings last month, but they have scored twice in both of the last two games, although Sunday’s 2-2 draw against Sevilla was a disappointing result. It left the team two points adrift of Atletico and the gap is now at five points.

The 34-time Spanish champion pipped Barcelona in spectacular style last season to finish in the top spot, but it has started to look like Zidane’s men left themselves with too much to do with an inconsistent start to the campaign.

Real haven’t lost any of the last 15 league games, but a run of three draws in the past five rounds has slowed their momentum. The drop of form started after a 2-1 win over Barcelona, which looked like a huge step towards the title for Real, but the goals suddenly dried up for a few weeks.

Granada have struggled at both ends of the pitch since the turn of the year picking up only six league wins in 2021. Beating Barcelona 2-1 on April 28 was a huge result for the club, but they have taken a step back after a seventh-place finish in 2019-20.

Following last year’s success, manager Diego Martinez even had a chance to lead his side in the Europa League this season, but it turned into a distraction for the team as they haven’t coped well with the much busier fixtures list.

Granada made it through all the way to the quarter-finals in Europe before crashing out against Manchester United. They finished the campaign with three consecutive losses meaning that they have suffered eight defeats in 11 games ahead of the clash with Real, which can’t be good for the team’s confidence.

The head-to-head results against Real aren’t providing Granada with a boost in confidence either with the Madrid side winning 11 straight meetings. The Andalusians have scored in only four of the matches and the run of results includes a whopping 9-1 victory for Real in 2015.
