The tide has turned in the matchup ever since Jürgen Klopp’s first full season at Liverpool. United did the double over Liverpool in 2015-16 but have since then registered just one league win in 10 meetings. Six of the games have ended in draws and Liverpool have won three of the matches including last season’s clash at Old Trafford.
Bruno Fernandes gave United an early lead in that fixture in May but Liverpool quickly turned things around by being up at halftime and won comfortably 4-2 in the end. They can now record back-to-back league victories at Old Trafford for the first time since 2002.
Visiting Old Trafford used to be very intimidating for visiting sides, but United boasts an awful defensive record at home and keeps coughing up points because of it. They have gone 12 straight games without a clean sheet at home, which is the club’s worst run since 1964.
With Raphael Varane out injured, the chances of stopping the leak seem unlikely. Especially against a side like Liverpool who are scoring goals for fun and have just put three past Atletico Madrid.
Liverpool blew a 2-0 lead in Madrid midweek, but with Mohamed Salah currently unstoppable the victory was never in doubt. On Tuesday, the Egyptian superstar became the first player in club history to score in nine consecutive outings and he should fancy his chances of extending the streak even further against United.
United will know that they can’t rely on their defense and have to go all out in attack although the approach could be the exact opposite if Fernandes is forced to miss the game. According to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Fernandes is battling an injury ahead of the contest and is questionable for Sunday.
Losing Fernandes would be a massive blow for United with the Portuguese playmaker having been involved in a league-high 41 percent of his team’s attempts on goal this season leading to creating 31 chances and recording 26 shots.
