Man City Can Break Yet Another Record in Season Opener

Manchester City will have another record in their sights on Sunday when they start the new Premier League season with a road outing against Tottenham. The defending champions can become the first team in English top-flight history to start a new league season with a win in 11 consecutive years.

10Bet LogoBookmaker 10Bet has the odds at 3.75 for the visitors to win with both teams scoring and at 2.90 for City to win with a clean sheet.

Pep Guardiola’s team is looking to break a tie with Aston Villa who won 10 consecutive season openers from 1891-92 to 1900-01. The Citizens made a very rough start to last season, but they kicked things off with a comfortable 3-1 road victory over Wolverhampton.

City are the odds-on favorites for the clash, but it likely won’t be easy to start with three points this time around. Guardiola has admitted that his side could have another inconsistent start to the season because the team hasn’t had a preseason together. The Catalan had all of his players back in training only on Thursday.

Many expected Harry Kane to be part of the City camp by now, but the England captain is still with Tottenham, which would make his appearance on Sunday a very intriguing sight. New Spurs boss Nuno Espirito Santo has said that he will decide Kane’s participation in the game following Saturday’s training session.

Tottenham have won only five of their last 17 Premier League matches without Kane, but one of the victories was a 2-0 result at home against City in February 2020.

Guardiola’s men tend to beat up most sides with ease, but they actually haven’t yet produced a winning effort at the new Tottenham stadium. In fact, Guardiola could lose four consecutive road outings against an opponent for the very first time in his career.

The last two Premier League meetings hosted by Spurs ended in a 2-0 defeat for City and they were taken down 1-0 by a Son Heung-min goal a couple of years ago in the Champions League.

Son has scored in all three appearances against City at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and he’s notched six goals in total in the matchup. The South Korean has managed more goals across all competitions only against Southampton (11).

Tottenham’s campaign in 2020-21 was a nightmare, but the finish was strong at home with six wins in eight games. They should be able to compete against a history-chasing City – with or without Kane.
