It’s been a fantastic campaign for Leverkusen so far, and it all began with a 3-2 victory over Leipzig. Xabi Alonso’s men struggled to find the back of the net over the final few weeks of the 2022-23 season, but it looked like a completely different team out there against the Red Bulls, and it ended up being only a glimpse of what was to come.

Only three sides have avoided defeat against Leverkusen in the Bundesliga this season, and 47 goals scored puts the side among the most prolific clubs in the top European leagues. Additionally, Alonso has seen his side concede just 12 times – only Real Madrid, Inter Milan, and Nice have a better defensive record across the big five leagues.

Leipzig has also played well, but the team’s form dipped near the end of 2023, and the new year also started with a bad result, as Frankfurt became the first visiting side to win at the Red Bull Arena last Saturday. Leipzig will now try to avoid having back-to-back home league losses for the first time since 2018.

Can Marco Rose and his men capitalize on Leverkusen’s selection problems? The visitors’ star man, Victor Boniface, is nursing a groin, and three players have linked up with their international teams for the Africa Cup of Nations, including key defender Odilon Kossounou.

Leipzig has Amadou Haidara taking part in the tournament in the Ivory Coast, and captain Willi Orban is out with a knee injury, but the team has just received a boost with the return of Dani Olmo. The Spanish midfielder had last played in the Bundesliga on Oct. 28 before returning a week ago.

Overall, Olmo has logged just 39 minutes of Bundesliga action since enjoying a superb start to the campaign. He posted two goals and an assist in the first three games of the season before running into injury troubles. Olmo will almost be like a January signing for Leipzig, and he’ll no doubt be fired up to perform well after missing so much action.
