Having suffered a shock defeat against Brentford over the weekend, Chelsea will try to get back on track Wednesday against Real Madrid in a big Champions League match-up.
The Blues need to find their scoring boots again and bookmaker William Hill has the odds at 3.60 for Chelsea to score in both halves. The odds are at 5.00 for Real to do it.
※ Current Odds Date & Time: April 5th, 1:00 P.M. (EST)
These two clash in the Champions League for a second consecutive season. Chelsea won a semifinal tie 3-1 on aggregate on their way to winning the whole shebang a year ago. Stamford Bridge hosted the decisive game and Chelsea grabbed a 2-0 victory to advance.
The Blues are decently placed to repeat their success this season although they haven’t hit quite the same heights with their play as they did last season.
Chelsea’s defensive numbers have nosedived in 2021-22 and their offensive numbers haven’t been consistent either as multiple players have struggled to hit form. For example, Timo Werner, who was one of Chelsea’s scorers last season at Stamford Bridge against Real, sits on just one Premier League goal through 15 outings.
Romelu Lukaku seems to be more of an impact sub nowadays and there is a lot of pressure on the midfield to get goals. Chelsea might be able to slow down Real’s attack but somebody still needs to get the goals to secure the win.
Real suffered their own embarrassing defeat a few weeks ago in the El Clasico against Barcelona, but they found the winning formula again quickly in Saturday’s meeting with Celta Vigo. Karim Benzema was the star of the show again in a 2-1 win and he’ll be expected to lead the charge again for Real on Wednesday.
The France international has just posted a new career-high with 34 goals scored across all competitions and he also boasts 13 assists for the campaign. Benzema is generally in the middle of everything Real does offensively and keeping his effect on the game at the minimum will be a great challenge for Chelsea.
Real have yet to beat Chelsea in five previous meetings and they will also try to end Chelsea’s superb home run in European action. The Blues have won five straight home outings in the Champions League without conceding a single goal and they have taken just three home losses in the competition since the start of 2017-18.
