After reaching the Bundesliga for the first time in club history, Heidenheim struggled through the early parts of the season, but manager Frank Schmidt found a way to steady the ship in early December – a 3-2 home victory over Darmstadt sparked a three-game winning streak and three draws have followed.
The side from Southern Germany must be full of confidence right now, and Dortmund could be in for a difficult evening. Through nine outings, Heidenheim has suffered only two home defeats – on both occasions, against Hoffenheim and Augsburg, Schmidt’s men blew a two-goal lead.
Heidenheim’s home games have produced 33 goals in total, and a fearsome trio is leading the team’s attack. Eren Dinkci, Tim Kleindienst, and Jan-Niklas Beste have combined for 18 of the team’s 28 goals in the league this season. Dinkci and Kleindienst scored the goals when Heidenheim battled out a 2-2 draw against Dortmund in the reverse fixture in September.
Dortmund travels to the Voith-Arena with a five-game unbeaten streak. Following a bad spell, which brought Dortmund three losses across five league matches, Edin Terzic has guided his team to two draws and three wins. Impressively, Dortmund has scored 10 times in its three Bundesliga outings in 2024.
Niclas Füllkrug has been the in-form man for Dortmund. He bagged a hat trick in last week’s 3-1 victory over Bochum and has boosted his Bundesliga goals tally to nine with a four-goal effort across his past two league appearances. He’ll be desperate to improve his below-par career record against Heidenheim – Füllkrug has struck just once in his previous 12 matches against the side.
The six-foot-two center forward is set to start up front with Jadon Sancho and Marco Reus. Sancho left Manchester with a bad reputation, but he’s wasted no time reintroducing himself to the Dortmund fans. The 23-year-old has yet to score in three appearances since his return, but Sancho does boast two assists despite having played only 184 minutes.
