Can Schalke Put a Stop to Horrible Losing Run Before the World Cup Break?

Having lost only two of their first six games, Die Königsblauen will have been pretty satisfied with their start to their comeback campaign but it’s all gone wrong since then. Schalke can’t stop conceding goals and their scoring numbers have also been awful.

It’s a very worrying situation for the club as things haven’t improved under a new manager either. Thomas Reis has lost both of his first two games in charge with the team scoring just once and allowing four goals.

To get Schalke moving in the right direction, Reis needs to start getting clean sheets with the team and hope that Simon Terodde can find his scoring boots again. The veteran forward has an incredible scoring record in the 2. Bundesliga and has won four Golden Boot awards in the league, but when it comes to top-flight games, Terodde always seems to disappoint. He’s currently stuck on two goals for the season.

Mainz have hit a bit of a wall as well ahead of Wednesday’s action losing back-to-back games. The team got picked apart by Bayern in their last road outing and they were no match to an in-form Wolfsburg side over the weekend. A meeting with a massively struggling opponent might be exactly what the doctor ordered for Bo Svensson’s team.

The Mainz side is led by the attacking duo of Karim Onisiwo and Marcus Ingvartsen. They have combined for eight of the team’s 18 goals and Ingvartsen’s form has been particularly impressive this season with him having scored four goals in just 380 minutes of action. Considering how poorly Schlake have played at the back, there should be a host of chances for Onisiwo and Ingvartsen Wednesday.

Schalke’s current woes also give Mainz a superb chance to improve their poor numbers in the head-to-head match-up. Schalke have won six of the previous 10 meetings between the two with Mainz settling for only one win. Last time out, they needed two penalties to escape a defeat against Schalke, and it’s been 11 years since Mainz’s last Bundesliga win in Gelsenkirchen.
