The odds for this title bout are weighed heavily in Usman’s favor with the Nigerian fighter priced at 1.271. A significant advantage compared to Edwards who is priced at 3.90. Can the Edwards improve on his performance against Usman the last time out and give us an event to remember? Let’s look at what the stats have to say.
Leon “Rocky” Edwards, fighting out of Kingston, Jamaica, is an elite UFC fighter with an impressive record of 19-3-0. What’s even more impressive is the fact that Edwards is currently on a 9-match win streak. His most recent victory came in June of 2021 against Nate Diaz where he won by decision in Round 5 of that bout.
He currently holds a purple belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu under Chiu Kwong Man. Compared to Usman, who holds a black belt in the same division, Edwards stands at a significant disadvantage being 5 lbs lighter than his opponent. A point to take into account given the fact that both fighters prefer ground combat where weight matters as much as technique.
The favorite and the current welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman, is the man to beat in Salt Lake City. Hailing from Auchi, Nigeria, Usman is currently the best fighter in the welterweight division of the UFC. With a mind blowing record of 20-1-0, it becomes easy to see why the oddsmakers see him as the favorite for this weekend’s title bout.
With a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu under Jorge Santiago and a background in wrestling, Usman has more than enough experience and technique to defend his welterweight title and remain at the No.1 spot of UFC rankings.
If that wasn’t enough, Usman is currently on a 15-match win streak earning him the nickname “the Nigerian Nightmare”. Indeed, defeating Usman will prove to be a monumental challenge for Edwards as he seeks to end his run of victories and claim the UFC welterweight title once and for all.
