Sony Open Hawaii | Full Field Returns to Golf for the First Time in 2023

The golf season is well and truly underway as the first full field event of the year is about to kick off in Hawaii with the Sony Open.

Plenty of action has gone down already in 2023 with Jon Rahm winning a thrilling Sentry Tournament of Champions earlier this week. The World No. 5 came back from seven shots behind at one stage to beat Collin Morikawa on the final day and claim his first win in Maui. Now, all eyes turn to the Waialae Country Club where 144 players will tee up to try and win the title.

Looking at the outright winner odds from William Hill, we can see that a handful of players are reasonably in the running to win this tournament.

Leading the odds is 20-year-old South Korean golf prodigy Tom Kim, who sits at 11.00. Kim is currently ranked No. 14 in the PGA Tour but has been within the top 10 recently. With 11 titles to his name and two of those on the PGA Tour, Tom Kim is a front runner to win the Sony Open Hawaii. Right behind him is countryman Sungjae Im at 13.00. Sungjae Im picked up his first PGA Tour win at the Honda Classic in 2019-20 and followed it up in 2021-22 with a win at the Shriners Children’s Open. The 24-year-old will be eager to gain a third win here this week.

Behind Kim and Im, Jordan Spieth sits at 15.00 before Brian Harman and Hideki Matsuyama are tied for fourth favourite at 17.00. America’s Spieth is a former World No.  1 and is looking to rekindle a little form with his ranking down at No. 15 in the world currently.

Hideki Matsuyama, on the other hand, is No. 21 in the world. The Japanese No. 1 comes to Hawaii with a mission: To defend his title from last year. In 2022, Matsuyama played an incredible back nine, making up a five shot deficit to force a play off with Russell Henley. Winning the playoff, Matsuyama completed an epic comeback to claim the Sony Open Hawaii 2022 title. This year, the 30-year-old will be hoping his victory is much smoother.

Betting on Matsuyama to make a top five finish is a strong bet at 4.50, while taking Tom Kim for the overall win at 11.00 is the safest money. Those looking for a riskier punt could wager on Jordan Spieth to find some form, but we say Kim is more likely to walk away victorious.
