Scotland has been very impressive in the qualifiers as the team has gone from strong to stronger in producing an outstanding 15 points in five games with 12 goals scored and only one conceded. The superb winning run includes a 2-0 triumph over Spain on home turf in March via a Scott McTominay brace.
McTominay has slowly become an afterthought at Old Trafford for Manchester United, but he’s been fantastic for Scotland in these qualifiers, scoring six goals in just four starts. Only Romelu Lukaku (8) has netted more times in the EURO 2024 qualifying campaign.
Having logged 383 minutes so far, McTominay has averaged a goal every 63.8 minutes, and he’s set to be among Scotland’s biggest dangermen again Thursday in Seville.
Losing to Scotland was a real shock for Spain, but the team recovered quickly from the negative result, and new manager Luis de la Fuente even managed to secure a trophy for La Roja, guiding the team to the Nations League crown in June. He will now be tasked with catching Scotland and winning Group A.
Spain, which sits on nine points with four games played, resumes the qualifiers after bagging a pair of massive victories last month. Alvaro Morata scored a hat trick as Spain ran amok against Georgia in an away game, and the last home outing finished with a 6-0 trashing of Cyprus. The team has looked extremely dangerous going forward and keeping Spain in check will be a massive challenge for Scotland at Estadio de La Cartuja.
Morata drew the plaudits with the hat trick in September, but Joselu has been the biggest success story of these qualifiers for Spain. The veteran forward made his international debut in March against Norway and immediately opened his account with two goals off the bench. He boasts four goals and one assist in total across four appearances. The Real Madrid man has been even more prolific than McTominay with his work, netting once every 45.7 minutes.
This will be the 15th meeting on the football pitch for the two nations. Prior to March’s victory, Scotland had gone four games without a win in the match-up, losing three times, but the head-to-head record is quite even between the teams. Spain has won six of the previous 14 clashes, with Scotland picking up four victories.
