Leverkusen might even be champions before Sunday, depending on how Bayern Munich and Stuttgart perform the day before. If both lose their respective games against FC Cologne and Eintracht Frankfurt, they wouldn’t even have a mathematical chance to catch up with Leverkusen.

Alonso’s team enters Sunday’s action fresh off its 37th win of the season. Two late goals gave Leverkusen a 2-0 victory over West Ham in the Europa League quarter-finals on Thursday. Incredibly, the team is still without a loss in all competitions this season, drawing only five times as well.

Leverkusen has had the stingiest defense in the Bundesliga, with 19 goals conceded, and the team is averaging close to 2.5 goals per game. This while having been without Nigerian ace Victor Boniface for a large chunk of the season. Boniface has only just returned to the lineup, playing his third match on Thursday following a lengthy recovery period from an adductor injury.

With Boniface back, Alonso has a near full-strength squad available to him, which will come in handy during a crucial stretch of the season as Leverkusen looks to win a treble.

Meanwhile, Werder is battling injuries and suspensions ahead of the trip to BayArena. Marco Friedl, Anthony Jung, and Jens Stage are all suspended for Sunday’s matchup, with five more players ruled out because of injuries.

Ola Werner has seen his team go six league matches without a win, and the selection problems only add to his frustrations. Underperforming when the season is drawing to a close has been an issue that’s plagued Werder for many years. A season ago, the side picked up only one point from the last five league fixtures, and the 2020-21 campaign, which ended in relegation, finished with a 10-match run without a win.

Escaping another negative result on Sunday is a very difficult task for Werder, which hasn’t won any of the last seven meetings with Leverkusen. Die Werkself completely dominated this season’s first clash, winning 3-0 in Bremen near the end of November.
