Following a perfect record in the group stage, Real continued its winning streak in Europe with a 1-0 victory at the RB Arena on Feb. 13. Brahim Diaz scored the lone goal of the contest early in the second half. The result is part of Real’s very impressive 31-match unbeaten streak across all competitions.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side has dominated throughout the campaign, but there have been a few worrying results for the team lately. Real has failed to win twice in its last three league outings and performed poorly for most of the 90 minutes over the weekend in a 2-2 draw with Valencia.
Valencia’s efforts should inspire Leipzig, which enters Wednesday’s match-up following one of its biggest wins of the season – the team crushed Bochum 4-1 away from home on Saturday.
Leipzig has been in inconsistent form, but the side boasts a good scoring record and a sharp attack should give Marco Rose’s men a realistic chance of turning things around at Bernabeu on Wednesday.
Led by Lois Openda, the Red Bulls have scored at least once in 29 of their 34 matches in all competitions this season. The Belgian forward has shot blanks in back-to-back Champions League matches, but his overall form has been impressive. Bayern Munich is the only side to keep Openda from scoring in his last seven Bundesliga outings, and he boasts 21 goals in 34 games for the entire season.
Real has Antonio Rüdiger back in the lineup to deal with Openda’s threat. The German center-back missed the opening leg while nursing a hamstring problem, but he has made a quick return from injury. Ancelotti also has Jude Bellingham available again after he returned from an ankle sprain against Valencia.
Bellingham has been involved in at least one goal in all of his five Champions League appearances this season, registering four goals and three assists in total. With Bellingham and Vinicius Junior leading the charge for the hosts, Leipzig must deliver a well-rounded performance to grab a quarter-final ticket in Madrid.
