But could it be that over the coming years this term is increasingly used in women’s tennis instead referring to Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina? Heading into Wimbledon 2023, it sure feels like that could be the case as these three dominant the narrative.
With Elena Rybakina the defending champion at Wimbledon, Aryna Sabalenka winning the Australian Open and Iga Swiatek the most recent French Open, it feels as though Wimbledon 2023 is the tie-breaker between these three. Can Rybakina bounce back from some patchy health the past month and defend her title? Will Swiatek roll her Roland-Garros momentum into a first Wimbledon victory? Or does Sabalenka step on the gas and surge to No. 1 in the world with a win here?

It’s no surprise that Iga Swiatek, Elena Rybakina and Aryna Sabalenka sit one, two and three in the outright betting odds to win Wimbledon 2023 at bookmaker William Hill. Swiatek leads on 3.75 while Rybakina is second at 5.50 with Sabalenka breathing down her neck on 6.00. Behind these three, there’s a substantial gap, as two-time champion Petra Kvitova comes in fourth favourite at 11.00 before teenager Coco Gauff rounds out the top five on 15.00.
With little separating the top three in women’s tennis in the Wimbledon 2023 betting odds, let’s take a look at the argument for each contender this tournament.
Iga Swiatek is something of the obvious choice to win Wimbledon 2023 simply because of her dominance in women’s tennis the past 18 months. Since the retirement of Ash Barty, she’s been in devastating form, racing to the World No. 1 spot and winning three of the past five Grand Slams. While she’s been less invincible this year, she still hits the grass as the most recent Grand Slam winner. However, Swiatek has an underwhelming record at Wimbledon, only making the round of 16 once in three attempts. If she’s to win here, it will be uncharted territory.
Rybakina is the next logical bet given she went all the way here in 2022. The Kazakh began her season in red-hot form making the Australian Open final before falling one match short of completing the Sunshine Double. Add in another Masters crown in Rome and Rybakina was looking virtually unstoppable heading into Roland-Garros. However, since then, the 24-year-old has struggled with illness withdrawing from Roland-Garros and only playing once since for an early loss in Berlin. How she will hold up in London is unknown making her a risky bet.
The final option is a wager on Aryna Sabalenka. The 25-year-old is a former Wimbledon semi-finalist and won her first Grand Slam at the start of 2023. She’s 35-7 for the year having also won in Adelaide and Madrid while making the finals of Indian Wells and Stuttgart and semi-finals of Roland-Garros. Her grass form is light, however, given she’s only competed at Wimbledon once in the past five years and suffered an early loss in her only grass tournament this year. She’ll also face heavy attention from the press regarding the war in Ukraine most likely, something which could weigh on her mentally at Wimbledon.
Overall, we say that Iga Swiatek is the best bet here. She may not have proven herself on grass yet but with her track record of winning Grand Slams, the lack of pressure on her this year, and the mitigating factors impacting her rivals, we say the young Pole picks up another major title here in a fortnight’s time.
