The Basque team travels to Paris with an injury-hit squad, having lost a number of vital contributors over the last few weeks. There’s a lack of options at left-back following injuries to Aihen Munoz and Kieran Tierney, and the attack remains without Sheraldo Becker and Carlos Fernandez. Top scorer Mikel Oyarzabal has also missed the last couple of games and might not be ready to return.
Oyarzabal is definitely the biggest miss for Sociedad, and the recent results show why. The team has failed to score in four consecutive games and would definitely be more threatening with Oyarzabal on the pitch. The Spanish international has hit 12 goals in 31 outings across all competitions in 2023-24.
La Real’s attack should also get a boost with the return of Takefusa Kubo. He missed seven matches whilst on international duty with Japan before returning to the lineup at the weekend against Osasuna.
PSG has a host of players missing from the back, with Presnel Kimpembe, Nuno Mendes, and Layvin Kurzawa out injured, but Kylian Mbappe is set to return to action. The Parisians rested their biggest star at the weekend against Lille, and Mbappe should be raring to go on Wednesday.
The Champions League group stage didn’t go too well for Mbappe as the entire team struggled to perform and only narrowly qualified for round 16. But his form overall has been as good as it’s ever been. In 29 appearances across all competitions, Mbappe has scored 30 times while registering seven assists. He has failed to find the back of the net just once in his last nine outings.
Stopping Mbappe will be the key to Sociedad’s success on Wednesday, and Imanol Alguacil’s men should get some belief from the fact that they have conceded only once in their past four games. Goalkeeper Alex Remiro even had a personal shutout streak of 713 minutes in La Liga before being beaten by Osasuna’s Ante Budimir at the start of the second half in Saturday’s 1-0 loss.
